What is the International Year One in Engineering?
The International Year One in Engineering is a pathway programme that prepares international students to enter Year 2 of a BEng (Hons) Engineering degree at Newcastle University in the UK.
The programme combines:
- first-year engineering modules
- academic English classes
- study skills and project work
- practical laboratory experience.
Students who meet the required grades continue directly to Year 2 of an engineering degree at Newcastle University.
Combined pathway and degree (iCAS) options
Some students may qualify for the iCAS (integrated Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) option. This allows the pathway programme and degree to be combined in a single study plan, on the same visa, simplifying the process for international students.

Age Requirement

All students commencing courses on a published September start date must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year. For all other start dates, students must be 17 years old on the published start date of the program.Academic Requirements

IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum of 4.5 in writing and 4.0 in all other subskills) or equivalent.iCAS
If you have a higher English language level, you may qualify for our iCAS – integrated Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) – programme. Combining your pathway and degree in a single study plan, you’ll only need one visa for the duration of your studies and can apply with alternative English language qualifications to IELTS.
